Nature's inspiration

These beautiful leaves were collected from my friend Margaret's property. My current work is about her and her sense of place, figure and landscape. I am stitching the leaves together as the base under the feet of the sculpture. Nature provides us with so much inspiration.

Next stage

Friday /Saturday was spent working under the guidance of Dion Channer at his studio and paper mill.
Not only is he a master papermaker with 30yrs experience but a wonderful man. He kindly shared his time, experience, knowledge and paper making equipment allowing me to produce the paper I needed for my current project. I took the fibre cooked, then gave it a hand beat and then into Dion's Hollander beater. Then onto the vacuum table. I cannot thank Dion enough and his assistant Angelina for all their help and support. It was truly appreciated.

Putting the fibre directly into the prepared mould. This is a totally new experience for me as I normally  place it dry.

Preparation of casts

At the moment, I am preparing the casts for the paper. I really enjoy the process and the journey. There is always plenty of problem solving to do. I love that it slows me down and is quite meditative.

Hat fun

After making up my materials it takes a few days before they set and are ready to use so I thought I would cast a hat. I used lots of vaseline on the hat itself and the mould came out fantastic.

New work journey

After many months of thinking, my new work has begun. I travelled to Glen Innes in NSW to work with a dear friend of over 30 years. We spent many hours chatting and casting. The new work has been inspired by a poem that was written by her. This will be revealed later on. My work will hopefully highlight and give voice to rural women and their connection to the land.

I am making paper from bulrush and plant fibres from the property. I love working with natural materials gathered from the landscape. I am doing lots of exploration with different techniques and will keep you updated with successes and failures.

Lots of learning

It has been a few months since I have been able to update you on my learning journey. The time gets away so quickly. I have been learning lots of new skills and was fortunate to attend Paper Secrets  A Hanji  making workshop with New York Artist Aimee Lee in Burnie Creative Paper Tasmania. It was a truly inspiring workshop and I learnt lots of new skills. Aimee was very generous with sharing lots of tips and advice. I met lots of other fabulous women with a passion for paper. I also got to see Paper on Skin a truly incredible array of outstanding work, and our own Svenja from Qld taking out first prize.

I had never travelled around Tasmania before and was really taken back by the overwhelming beauty everywhere. It was truly inspiring and we will be returning. We got to see many beautiful places and loved every moment. Hiking at Cradle mountain was a little cold at -4 but very worth it, as we were fortunate to have snow on the mountain. Had a wonderful visit to Mona.

Also tried my hand at a new skill with wood

Attended a workshop by Carol Russell at  Artisan,  King Street Bowen Hills. Carol was absolutely wonderful and I truly loved all I learnt and am keen to add to my skills with lots of practice. It has been a busy and rewarding few months. I am off to Glen Innes for my next project working with some country women next weekend. Looking forward to showing you as it develops.

Inspiration in Sydney
The image of my artwork "women Afoot" was used to help promote Tom Bass Prize in Juniper Hall Paddington. Sydney 2018.

Very fortunate to be able to visit Sydney and see the 21st Biennale of Sydney. Cockatoo Island being my favourite. Thought provoking works by many incredible artists. Ai Weiwei, Yukinori Yanagi, Khaled Sabsabi and Suzanne lacy.

Wonderful visit to Wendy Whiteley's secret garden Lavendar Bay.

Caught up with my friend Tammy at beautiful Balmoral Beach.
 The harbour was just magnificent.
